Mermaid & Moon Lamp

LOVELY PORCELAIN LITHOPHANE LUMINAIRE

Our favorite porcelain light features not one but two popular mermaid paintings by David Delamare- "The Mermaid & The Moon" and "Music of the Spheres". Four large porcelain panels grace this lovely accent lamp. (Each image repeats twice.) The Asian influenced frame is crafted of metal with black semi-gloss enameled finish and arrives with a bulb, and a six foot cord with in-line switch. The lamp is 13-1/4" tall.

The craftsmen who make these lamps describe them as follows:
"Lithophanes were conceived in 1827, when it was discovered that a remarkable three dimensional image could be produced by shining light through a carving of varied thicknesses in porcelain. These beautiful transparencies are achieved by first carrving the image into beeswax. The translucency of the wax allows the artist to see the result of his labor as he works. A plaster casting is taken from this masterwork, then a fine porcelain paste is pressed into this mold. After drying, the panels are kiln fired to 2300 degrees, to achieve their extreme density and amazing translucency. Over half do not survive this process; a testimony to the difficulty of this technique. We are dedicated to the preservation and continuation of this most unusual art form."
